These are the events and aways missions of the USS Ulysses and her affiliates. Following are pictures of Star Trek fans, so be warned. They might not appear to be normal. Not all away missions are created equal, so some will have (a lot) more pictures than others. Live long and prosper and don't let the bed bugs bite. Enjoy!

"Bears With Me" Away Mission, Palmdale, CA
April 4, 2004

The group gathers for caravaning out to the Bear With Me compound in the hills. Gene looks ready to go!
Juanita plays smartass. Bonnie is happy to be here.
So am I, but I need my sunglasses! Group shot before take off.
Arriving on the compound, the lilacs are irresistable. Up close and personal.
White lilacs. Now here are some very purple lilacs. Gorgeous!
Ali Oop! A 1200 lb. Kodiak male bear, normally weighs 1400 lbs but is fasting for the mating season. Ruth LaBarge, the trainer and owner of the bears, feeds Ali Oop while talking to us.
He waves goodbye, or is that hello? He says his prayers.
He says, "More, mommy, more!" That's a BIG bear.
Baby California Black bear, we got to hold him! Bonnie and cub. My turn!
Sooooo cuuutte! Juanita and cub. He's starting to act up.
Gene gets a cuddle as well. Bonnie puckers up for Ali Oop.
Gene bestows a kiss on Ali Oop. That was one slimy kiss!
Ali Oop turns down his birthday surprise of ice cream and cakes. So, Ruth adds some spaghetti and meatballs to it. Yum.
Whopper kicks the ball through the hoop, sort of. Whopper is a 1000 lb junior Kodiak male and still growing! Here, he plays asleep.
Top, he looks well fed.

Right, Whopper does his impression of a man-eating grizzly!
Left, Betty, she's a cutie, a 645 lb. female Kodiak bear, she looks almost cuddly.

Top, her ferocious imitation.

Top, Ruth gives her a meatball.

Right, she says, "Hi!"
Top, Betty looks like a fluffy teddy bear and a lot bigger than her trainer!

Left, she stands up but doesn't look too ferocious.

Gene takes a breather. Gene takes my picture - it's a picture war!
Bonnie grabs a soda. Juanita waits for her painting!
I watch from the sidelines. Barney paints with finesse.
Juanita's final masterpiece. One baby bear attacks the other baby bear.
Top, his fur is surprisingly coarse.

Right, Ursula, an 870 lb. Kodiak female, she's a lot bigger than the Kodiak males you'd find in the wild!
Ursula does her paw grab. Now she plays dead!
Left, Bonkers, a male California black bear, sits in the bear chair.

Top, Juanita and Bonkers.

Bonnie and Bonkers. Bonnie gets to pet Bonkers. Only on the back, because he doesn't like his ears to be touched.
I get to pet him! Bonnie and Ali Oop, with Ruth LaBarge.
Me and Ali Oop! Juanita and Ali Oop.
Gene and Ali Oop. Smile! The group watches Barney lounge in his tub.
Barney is loving the attention, or maybe it's all that water he likes to splash around in. There was a moment when one of the kids ran past the fence and Barney was out of that tub like lightening! Juanita squeeked and I took an involuntary step back and froze.

It was an awesome sight but reminded us that these bears, though trained, have an instinct for the hunt that only the fences keep under control. He was FAST. We also learned that bears can run up to 35 mph, which is faster than the fastest human sprinter on earth. So never run!
